UN congratulates Iraq on liberation of Ramadi from terrorists

NEW YORK, Dec. 31 (MNA) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon congratulated Iraqi Premier Haider al-Abadi for the liberation of the central city of Ramadi from the ISIL control.

According to the Office of the UN Chief's spokesman, Ban called Al-Abadi for the triumph of the Iraqi security forces in the capital of Al Anbar, one of the worst-hit by the terrorists in their effort to impose a caliphate in the region.

The liberation of Ramadi was an important victory that should be followed by measures to restore the rule of law and the basic services to the population, the diplomat told Al-Abadi.

He also defended the return of the displaced as soon as possible, something that started to occur in the past few hours.

In his telephone conversation, the Un chief conveyed the premier the concern for the recent kidnapping of a group of citizens from Qatar in Iraqi territory, including children.

Baghdad launched an offensive against ISIL, supported by US-led foreign bombings.

According to Iraqi authorities, Ramadi will be used as a platform to recover the northern city of Mosul, occupied last year by the terrorists.
